Buyers will not only have more options to choose from when shopping for a used Transit, but they’ll also be able to enjoy lower lifetime ownership costs thanks to the sheer number of models on the road.

Cargo vans tend to stick around a little longer than your average model, and the Transit is no exception. In fact, even after 60 years, the van is only in its fourth generation. Those shopping the preowned market should consider a model produced since 2020, which was when Ford graced the van with a mid-cycle refresh that saw it gain an available AWD powertrain, a power sliding door, and a full suite of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) like automated emergency braking and forward-collision warning. 2022 brought an all-new, all-electric option in the Ford e-Transit. While it’s a model of efficiency with 126 miles of electric range, the van is only available as a cargo model. Finally, there’s the Transit Connect, a smaller option that’s perfect for making deliveries around town or accommodating up to six passengers.

Ram ProMaster

Sweet Spot: First Generation (2014 to 2021)

The Ram ProMaster is a relative newcomer to the van segment, with the first-generation model debuting in 2014. Like the Transit, the second-generation ProMaster offers an electrified option in the form of the ProMaster EV. Ram did produce a five-passenger ProMaster City model between 2017 and 2022, but it was discontinued at the close of the first generation. It might not be right for every application, but for a certain set of drivers, the downsized version is sure to hold some appeal. The ProMaster City could accommodate significantly more payload than the Ford Transit Connect, 1,890 lbs compared to 1,500 lbs in the Ford, while still logging similarly stellar fuel economy with up to 28 mph highway.
