Today, we will give you a sense of what kind of performance you can get from a used Frontier by looking at five specific model years that beautifully illustrate what this truck can do.

The 2002 Nissan Frontier – First-Generation Capabilities

Although you’re not typically going to find a used Frontier this old at one of our Rusty Wallace dealerships, we thought it was a great place to start since it shows you how this truck has grown and developed over the decades.

The Frontier first hit the road prior to this, but we like the 2002 model as a showcase of the best that the first generation had to offer—plus a refresh for the previous 2001 model year enhanced the power and performance of this pickup. Looking at a 2002 Frontier, you’ll find a standard 2.4L I-4 engine that provides 143 hp, offering a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic.

We’ll admit that looking back 20 years later, that’s not exactly mind-blowing performance, but keep in mind that the Frontier was a compact truck in its first generation. More importantly, this is only the standard engine—a second, more powerful one is available to enhance performance.

You can find a 3.3L supercharged V6 engine that delivers 210 hp and 246 lb-ft of torque, which is quite impressive for a pickup this old. This was actually the first compact truck to have a supercharged engine directly from the factory, showcasing Nissan’s approach to delivering robust power in their trucks. Both two-wheel drive (4×2) and four-wheel drive (4×4) models are available for the 2002 Frontier.

The 2005 Nissan Frontier – Moving Into the Second Generation

Jumping forward a bit, the 2005 Nissan Frontier is still a 20-year-old pickup, but this is the start of its second generation. For its second generation, Nissan completely redesigned and updated the Frontier, increasing its size to a midsize truck—it’s remained in this segment ever since.

As much as we love compact trucks, there’s no denying that a midsize option is a better choice for many drivers looking to get a bit more from their pickup. Like before, both 4×2 and 4×4 models are out there for this Frontier, but two new engines push the second-generation Frontier further than previous years.

Standard on the 2005 Nissan Frontier is a 2.5L I-4 engine, similar in some respects to the previous starting powertrain, but enhanced from what came before. With 152 hp and 171 lb-ft of torque, this engine isn’t a massive upgrade but is notably better.

The star of the show, however, is the new 4.0L V6 engine that delivers 265 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque, an impressive boost to performance compared to previous models. When properly equipped, the 2005 Frontier can handle up to 6,500 lbs of towing, making it a powerful and capable midsize truck.

The 2009 Nissan Frontier – Updated Features and Performance

One of the more notable things about the second generation of the Nissan Frontier is how long it lasted; it launched with the 2005 model we just looked at and ran through the 2021 model year.

We’ll admit that 17 years for a single generation is quite lengthy and was a criticism that Nissan faced with the Frontier. Fortunately, there were quite a few updates and refreshes during that time; a complete redesign for a new generation would’ve been significant, but at least Nissan recognized that refreshed styling and features were important. Although engines for 2009 were generally the same as those in 2005, other performance updates are worth noting.

If you look at 2009 Nissan Frontiers, you’ll find three transmission options: a five-speed automatic, a six-speed manual, or a five-speed manual, depending on the engine and trim. Considering how difficult it is to find manual transmissions, it’s nice to look back and see when they were still considered important for impressive trucks like this. The 2009 Frontier also introduces the PRO-4X off-road model, providing impressive 4×4 engineering, Bilstein off-road shocks, and skid plates to protect underbody components like the oil pan and transfer case.

The 2020 Nissan Frontier – End of the Second Generation

If you’re interested in a more recent Nissan Frontier, the 2020 model is a terrific place to start. As we said, the second generation for this truck ran through 2021, so this is still a second-gen Frontier, but there were some major updates at this point as Nissan got ready to introduce its fully redesigned third generation.

Styling and interior features were updated throughout the second generation of the Frontier, so models like this toward the end of that period don’t look dated or feel old-fashioned. Some models have dual-zone climate controls, a power-sliding glass moonroof, and leather-appointed seating.

The big news for the 2020 model year, and the best reason to start here when looking at more-recent used options, is a new engine. The standard 2.5L I-4 and available 4.0L V6 engines are gone, discontinued following the 2019 model year. Powering the 2020 Nissan Frontier is a new 3.8L V6 engine that delivers 310 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. You’ll still find both 4×2 and 4×4 models here, but you can see that performance has been beautifully enhanced; towing capacity reaches 6,720 lbs when properly equipped due to this new powertrain.

The 2022 Nissan Frontier – Third-Generation Style and Features

Finally, if you’re interested in more modern features beyond the engine, then you’ll want to start with Frontier models from 2022 or later, which kick off the third generation after nearly two decades of the second-gen model.

In terms of performance, the same engine carries over from the end of the previous generation: the 310-hp 3.8L V6. Nissan used the last couple of years of the second generation to get this engine out onto the market and give it real-world testing to ensure it was as good as possible before kicking off the third-generation Frontier.
